A school bus, the beginning of Phase II construction, a village shop and women’s literacy classes marked an eventful autumn in Chikola.
The School Bus Is Here
After months of fundraising and several generous donations, Lameck travelled to Dar es Salaam to purchase and insure the long-awaited school bus. Children, teachers and parents were “indescribably happy”, and pupils from further away could now reach the school more safely.
Phase II Construction
An unexpected foundation grant brought a second building within reach. Plans included a dining room with a kitchen and, funds permitting, another classroom. The new hall would protect children from dust, mud, rain and the intense sun while also providing space for meetings and events.
A Small Village Shop
Lameck opened a small shop beside the school, stocking basic food, soft drinks and produce from the garden. The shop was quickly embraced by village residents who previously had no nearby place to buy essentials.
Women Empowerment
Adults had begun attending evening classes to learn to read and write. Tekla taught the highly motivated participants and supported their efforts to use their new skills to generate income for their families.
